What is Zi Wei Dou Shu?

紫微斗数 · Zǐ Wēi Dǒu Shù

The imperial chart of Chinese astrology. 14 major stars across 12 palaces mapping every domain of life - self, wealth, career, marriage, health, children, travel, parents.

The imperial system

Zi Wei Dou Shu (紫微斗数) - literally "Purple Star Astronomy" - is the second great system of Chinese destiny analysis, alongside BaZi. Where BaZi reads abstract patterns of element interaction, Zi Wei reads concrete life domains through the position of named stars in fixed life palaces.

Twelve palaces map your life

The chart is a 12-position structure - the 12 Palaces - each representing one fixed area of life: Self (命), Siblings (兄弟), Spouse (夫妻), Children (子女), Wealth (财帛), Health (疾厄), Travel (迁移), Friends (奴仆), Career (官禄), Property (田宅), Mental Spirit (福德), and Parents (父母).

Stars are assigned to palaces based on your birth date and time. The stars that land in each palace tell you the story of that life area: who is the dominant force, what energy colours it, where opportunity sits, and where to expect friction.

Fourteen major stars carry archetypes

The 14 Major Stars are the dominant figures: Zi Wei (the Emperor), Tian Ji (the Strategist), Tai Yang (the Sun), Wu Qu (the General), Tian Tong (the Diplomat), Lian Zhen (the Idealist), Tian Fu (the Treasurer), Tai Yin (the Moon), Tan Lang (the Charmer), Ju Men (the Critic), Tian Xiang (the Minister), Tian Liang (the Elder), Qi Sha (the Warrior), and Po Jun (the Disrupter).

Each star carries archetypal meaning - tendencies, gifts, blind spots. A star in your Career palace tells a different story than the same star in your Spouse palace. Reading Zi Wei is reading the conversation between palace and star.

The Four Transformations are the active forces

On top of the stars sit the Four Transformations (四化): Hua Lu (transformation of Wealth), Hua Quan (transformation of Power), Hua Ke (transformation of Honor), and Hua Ji (transformation of Obstacle). Based on your birth year, four of the major stars are stamped with these transformations.

The Transformations indicate where energy concentrates - which areas of life are alive with reward, where you wield natural authority, where recognition flows, and where the chronic friction sits. They are the chart's most active layer.

Common questions

How is Zi Wei Dou Shu different from BaZi?+
BaZi reads patterns and capacities through the Five Elements; Zi Wei reads life domains directly through the position of stars in 12 palaces. BaZi answers "what kind of person are you and what is your timing?" - Zi Wei answers "what is the picture in each area of your life?". Many serious readers use both.
What are the 12 Palaces?+
The 12 Palaces are fixed life domains: Self, Siblings, Spouse, Children, Wealth, Health, Travel, Friends, Career, Property, Mental Health/Spirit, and Parents. Stars land in each palace based on your birth, telling you the dominant story of that area of your life.
Who are the 14 Major Stars?+
The 14 Major Stars are the dominant figures of the chart - Zi Wei (Purple Star, the Emperor), Tian Ji (Heavenly Mechanism), Tai Yang (Sun), Wu Qu (Military), Tian Tong (Heavenly Sameness), Lian Zhen (Pure Chastity), Tian Fu (Heavenly Treasury), Tai Yin (Moon), Tan Lang (Greedy Wolf), Ju Men (Great Door), Tian Xiang (Heavenly Minister), Tian Liang (Heavenly Beam), Qi Sha (Seven Killings), and Po Jun (Breaking Army). Each carries archetypal meaning.
What are the Four Transformations?+
The Four Transformations (四化) - Hua Lu (Wealth), Hua Quan (Power), Hua Ke (Honor), Hua Ji (Obstacle) - are stamped onto specific stars based on your birth year. They are the most active forces in your chart, indicating where energy concentrates and where friction arises.
Do I need an exact birth time?+
Yes - same as BaZi. The hour of birth determines the position of every star in the chart. An incorrect hour produces a chart that resembles someone else's life entirely.
