What is BaZi?
八字 · Bā Zì
The foundational Chinese system for reading destiny from your exact birth time. Most rigorous, most widely used, oldest still-living tradition of personal analysis.
The eight characters
BaZi means "Eight Characters". Your birth year, month, day, and hour each contribute two characters - one Heavenly Stem and one Earthly Branch. Eight characters total, arranged in four pillars: Year Pillar, Month Pillar, Day Pillar, Hour Pillar.
Each pillar speaks to a domain of life. The Year Pillar represents your ancestry, society, and early years. The Month Pillar represents your parents, peers, and career environment. The Day Pillar represents you and your spouse. The Hour Pillar represents your children, your craft, and your later years.
The Day Master is you
The single most important character in your chart is the Heavenly Stem of your birth day - this is your Day Master. It is one of ten possibilities (five elements, each in a Yang or Yin polarity): Yang Wood, Yin Wood, Yang Fire, Yin Fire, Yang Earth, Yin Earth, Yang Metal, Yin Metal, Yang Water, Yin Water.
Every other character in your chart is read in relation to your Day Master. Does the chart give your Day Master support? Or is it overwhelmed? Is there resource feeding it, or is there too much wealth draining it? This relationship is the spine of the reading.
The Ten Gods translate element relationships into life
The relationships between your Day Master and other elements are formalized as the Ten Gods (十神): Direct Officer, Indirect Officer, Direct Wealth, Indirect Wealth, Eating God, Hurting Officer, Direct Resource, Indirect Resource, Friend, and Rob Wealth.
These names sound mystical, but they translate to plain things: career structures, sources of wealth, modes of expression, relationships with parents, with peers, and with romantic partners. The Ten Gods are how a reader translates raw element interplay into the answers you actually want about your life.
The Useful God is what your chart needs
A balanced chart is rare. Most charts are too strong (overwhelming Day Master) or too weak (Day Master starved). The Useful God (用神) is the element that, if added or strengthened, would bring the chart toward balance.
Once a reader determines your Useful God, everything follows: which years are favourable, which directions support you, what colours and materials work for you, what kind of work aligns with your nature, and what kind of partners complement you. Identifying the Useful God correctly is the central skill of the art.
Luck Pillars - your decade-by-decade overlay
Your natal chart is fixed - you are born with it. But your destiny is not static. Every ten years, a new Luck Pillar (大运) overlays your natal chart, adding one Heavenly Stem and one Earthly Branch to the picture. The interaction between your natal chart and the current Luck Pillar is what makes some decades feel like rising tide and others feel like uphill.
On top of Luck Pillars sit annual pillars (流年) and even monthly pillars. A skilled reader looks at all three layers together to time decisions: when to launch, when to wait, when to consolidate, when to expand.
What BaZi can and cannot tell you
BaZi reveals patterns, tendencies, capacities, and timing. It cannot tell you specific events with certainty. A chart strong in wealth structure does not guarantee wealth - it shows the capacity, and the rest is your action.
The Chinese tradition holds that destiny is one factor of five: heaven (your chart), earth (your environment and Feng Shui), human (your actions, character, and education), reading (knowing your chart and acting accordingly), and accumulated virtue. BaZi reads heaven; the rest is yours.
